Sergeant Neil Howie of the West Highland Police is dispatched to a remote Scottish island, Summerisle, to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. The locals are uncooperative, and deny that the girl ever existed. Howie’s investigation convinces him that the girl is in fact missing, and the inhabitants of the island are conspiring to hide the truth. He is more shocked by the pagan religion the inhabitants practice. Howie infiltrates the island May Day celebration in his search for the girl. The celebration takes a sinister turn. The film stars Edward Woodward (Breaker Morant) as Howie, Christopher Lee as Lord Summerisle, and features Ingrid Pitt (Vampire Lovers), and Britt Ekland (Goodnight in The Man With The Golden Gun). A few different "cuts" exist of this film. A remake starring Nicholas Cage has been widely panned. A disturbing film, but a must see!Read full review

I bought this movie because it is considered a classic suspense movie (not horror), and Christoper Lee, who recently died, considered The Wicker Man his best film. It won many awards. The film is certainly dated (1973), considering the actors attire, and direction, but that isn't an issue for me. Considering the 2006 remake with Nicolas Cage was a box-office failure, was panned by most critics, and has gained a cult following as an unintentional comedy, I think I'll stick with this release. This is the 88 minute theatrical release. The longer 94-minute version is said to be far better, and I wish I had bought it instead. My bad for not doing some research first. After doing some research, the best version is supposed to be the 3-disc deluxe British edition which contains the 94 minute and 88 minute cuts in full HD as well as the 100 minute version in standard definition, but it is only available in Region 2 and won't play on Region 1 American disc players. And it costs a bit more. There is a Region 1, 94-minute "final cut" version on Blue-Ray -- which is considered the best option for Region 1 viewers without access to a Region-free player. If you don't have a region-free player, that is the one to buy. (I have ordered it, and hopefully it will have closed captions.) The only negative issue for me is that this DVD does NOT have Closed Captions. That is the fault of Lions Gate, and I will be making a complaint to the FCC about that.Read full review
Bought this DVD because "The Wicker Man" has been one of my favorite horror/suspense type films for years. I very much prefer this 1973 original version over the fairly recent remake with Nicholas Cage. The cast includes Ed Woodward (The Equalizer), Christopher Lee, Ingrid Pitt, and many other UK film regulars. This is the US theatrical version which has a running time of about 88 minutes, as compared to the original long version which runs 99 minutes. While this one is considerably shorter, it does have a couple of scenes not in the long version. Most of the actors were unhapply with the cuts, with the exception of Ingrid Pitt who said it helped the pace of the movie. The DVD also includes some nice extra features, including the theatrical trailer and a "making of" documentary which has interviews with many of the cast members and producers. I recommend both this US theatrical version and the original longer version, both are 5 stars in my opinion.Read full review
