The SM86 gives excellent clarity to the mid to high frequency voice range. It also allows a wide range of gain control before feedback. It is a good tool for use in a large-room house of worship where a lot of echo is encountered, and singers tend to have mic fright.

I bought two of the SM86's to use at my church to replace a couple of the Sure prologue mics that belonged to the church. It blew me away of how much clearer vocals sounded on these mics. However, one night I was working an after hours event as a janitor at the University of South Carolina Sumter campus in Sumter SC. and knew they were going to have live musical groups that night. I had just purchased these microphones and was itching to try out there condensor ability. So I took the mics with me to work that night along with a Tascam P1 portable DAT recorder that I had won off of Ebay a couple nights before. (This was back in 2007). I sat in the sound booth of the university's Nettles auditorium which was as far away from the stage as I could get and after receiving permission from one of the groups that was to sing, I proceded to record, and conducted an experimental recording of that group. The experiment went well and, I burned a copy on to CD. I highly recommend these mics for live recordings. I sent Shure a copy of that recordering a couple weeks ago and they've arcived it. I still have the original recording on DAT.Read full review
This is a hands down great Mic. I love them and own several! If you look at price it is a clear winner over many microphones and some costing much more. Just in the Shure family alone, it is a condenser microphone that cost just a few dollars more than the Beta 58 or Beta 57. They are good mics but the SM86 is just smoother, warmer and has better vocal quality! It’s a workhorse and perfect live.
