I have yet to really test it in the mountains, but around town it holds a signal. Time will tell if the signal strength remains solid in steep terrain. The battery does get used up pretty well during a day, so backpackers should be prepared with some sort of a charging system tested in advance, because it takes a while even charging from my laptop, not sure how well a solar system would work. It's big but not too bulky, and the strap is really comfortable... The controls are manageable once you read the (not included) owners manual.

I've had the Core, Elementum Aqua and a couple of the Ambits and this is clearly the best Suunto yet. I also like it much more than the Garmin Fenix 3 and with a lower price tag to boot. That Garmin is nice but not as clear a screen and frankly it is meant for superstar triathletes and not for normal workout or even advanced workout/hiking types like me. Very cool really. I also often forget to take it off in the shower or the pool and I'm very pleased with the water resistance at that level. No problems at all really. It also stays charged longer than I expected so A+ from me! It surprised me at just how good a value it was for an obviously very well made ABC and hiking/tracker/smart watch-watch, too. Well done, Suunto! I really like Movescount, their online site for recording and I've uploaded some of my workouts by making a Movescount movie.
