The acting, the photography, and the storyline were compelling. Vanessa Redgrave plays a woman who has been in a mental hospital for fifty years. A young doctor delves into the patient's past. Via flashbacks (with Rooney Mara playing the the patient, Rose, as a young woman) we learn the story of her life and why she was committed. In many ways, this is TITANIC: a spirited girl, her one true love, and another man who lusts after her and, if he can't have her, tries to destroy her. In both films, the woman is named Rose! Another similarity (and this isn't a spoiler) is that both films require a box of Kleenex. No matter what happens at the end of THE SECRET SCRIPTURE (and I won't say what it is; I told you, this isn't a spoiler), the fact remains that this woman has spent FIFTY YEARS in a mental institution. No matter what happens from now on, that's an awfully long time that she can never get back.Read full review
