Media engineering consultant and industry pundit Gary Olson wrote the first edition of "Planning and Designing the IP Broadcast Facility - A New Puzzle to Solve" in 2014. Different than other technical writers, Gary updated his first edition and with the second edition went into greater depth on questions raised in the first edition.
There never seems to be enough time for a practicing media engineer to keep up with the continually evolving media and entertainment technology landscape. His book is a concise, easily digestible guide for industry veterans who are stuck in their silos and students who don't know just where to start.
This book helps disambiguate the alphabet soup of media engineering acronyms, demystify the jargon, and analyze the overlapping conglomeration of joint working groups and standards committees. Gary Olson seems to have developed a magic decoder ring to penetrate the idiosyncrasies of confusing terminology and industry-specific definitions, abbreviations, and initialisms. He defines acronyms and places their meaning in context. Gary explores misconceptions and explodes what he considers common myths, such as system and device interoperability.
Gary explains the assortment of terms invented by different standards organizations and industry alliances. He covers AMWA, FIMS, NMOS, AMES, ASPEN, VSF, ISO, IETF, and SMPTE and serves up a concise top-down explanation of JT-NM, SOA, BPM, SMPTE ST2110 and compression standards 12G-SDI, 4K, 8K, and UHD and delivery over 5G, ATSC3.0. And that's just before stopping to take a breath.
The 2nd Edition is much more than a media and entertainment technology glossary. Instead, it's a comprehensive tutorial on standards terminology and jargon that explains all the evolving pieces of the puzzle.
