Dan Gookin has been writing about technology for over 20 years. He combines his love of writing with his gizmo fascination to create books that are informative, entertaining, and not boring. Dan holds a degree in Communications/Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego. Presently, he lives in the Pacific Northwest, where he enjoys spending time with his sons playing video games inside while they watch the gentle woods of Idaho.

I just got my first Android phone , and this book really helped me figure out both what it can do and how to do it. It covers everything from e-mail and apps to maps and security, and does it with both good, clear directions and a conversational tone. Plus, it has just the right amount of wry wit, as with this from the intro: "Technical terms and topics, when they come up, are neatly shoved to the side, where they're easily avoided."

Not that I didn't get lost a few times, but that was more to do with the Android system than the book. The author doesn't assume you know what the various icons mean, and he guides you through the various ways you can type and dictate. So if you don't know what a widget or launcher are, this would be a good start.

Note: There should be a new edition of this book coming in the summer of 2020, so you may want to wait a few months for that.

I usually don't order the "dummy books" because they are too "jokey" and also too general to help with any specific product. However, I bought an inexpensive Lenovo tablet (Android), and it has no manual, not even on-line. There were certain specific things I could not figure out on my own (like how to use my file manager), even with YouTube videos, so I ordered this book. The book answered several of my questions and, in my opinion, it was worth the money, good for someone with little experience with tablets and cell-phones, and better-written than some of the "dummy" books.
