This is an excellent reference for advanced programming of views, view controllers, animations, drawing and all things iOS that you may not get from basic training elsewhere, though if you're a beginner new to iOS programming then you will definitely want to read Matt's iOS programming fundamentals book first.

Once you grasp Matt's writing style and understand when he "assumes" knowledge of other basic tasks (like when and how to sub-class a Cocoa class) then the material will flow very easily and you'll learn a great deal and will be inspired to improve upon your own projects with new ways of coding.

I will likely move right into the iOS 14 book when I feel I'm ready for the new features iOS 14 offers.

Matt is one of the best technical writers out there, and this is a comprehensive volume which serves both as instruction guide and as detailed reference. Highly recommended, and be sure to read this book all the way through to get a deep understanding of how and why things are done in iOS.

I buy a new edition every year, its a great resource in both "how to" and "why does" related to iOS.

Great book, except he illustrates basic concepts with his own projects, similar to an ESL teacher illustrating basic grammar with examples from TS Eliot. Not really useful.

Like a lot of lazy programmers, I rely primarily on Stackoverflow. But when I get really stuck, I turn to Matt's books. As somebody wrote somewhere else, he maybe the best technical writer on the planet.

This book doesn't give you a full program to show you how to apply all that reference material. I feel like I'm reading a software API manual that tells me the properties of a class but no code. Very small code snippets is shown but they are useless without a context. I read a lot of programming and technical books and seldom give them a poor review. This book states too much of the obvious and too repetitive of the XCode reference. For example: rowHeight: The height of every cell. Really? I'll be looking for a better book with helpful, complete programs. The weight and thickness of this book makes it look like substantial content but much of it just an API method/properties reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid grounding in iOS (not swift) fundamentals.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 1, 2020
Very detailed book on UIKit and related topics of iOS development. Slightly outdated due to the release of SwitUI - hence the 4 stars rather than 5. Still, a useful reference chock-full of insight into the underlying architecture of Swift and associated foundations, patterns and libraries. Well written, too.
