My 9-year old had received a different kit from Science Wiz (DNA) for her birthday and loved it so much, we had ordered a couple of other kits of her choice, including Light. She is very much a hands-on learner, and she absolutely loved the experiments in the Light kit. She did need my help with some of them, but in the end, everything worked the way it supposed to.
The kit includes a variety of easily packaged items, and you will need to use a few of more things from around the house ( I had to buy gelatin for the lens making experiment). I did not have clear plastic cups, but we used clear molds instead in making of the kaleidoscope. I wish I had read ahead of time the comment that advised using the colored sheets of paper to explain mixing of colors instead of food coloring - this was a great idea! Mixing of food coloring was messy and the resulting colors were rather muddy.

I bought this in November, anticipating I would run the experiments with my kids during the summer vacation. Well, summer vacation is here and I opened the box. To my surprise, there is no book to explain what to do with the various components. I have an MIT degree, and can sort of figure it out, but the average person will be puzzled by the kit without a few instructions. Unfortunately, the components are quite cheap, and you'll wind up throwing them away and substituting higher-quality stuff you have around the home. The components are a lot less expensive looking than the packaging -- so it's entirely possible to throw away nearly then entire kit looking for the materials, not realizing, oh crud, that that part is supposed to be an experiment; it's not packaging waste.

Most things in the kit are stuff the average scientifically literate person has around the house in higher quality for his kids anyway -- the included prism, magnifying glasses, and motor are poor-quality jokes. And alligator-clip wires? Seriously, if they included that they should have included the crayons, too -- which the box says you need to run at least one experiment in the nonexistent book. After all, they included a strip of wax paper, some cheap cellophane, and a rubber band. Particularly interesting is that they included two cheapo plastic sample trays, but noted on the shopping list on the box that it was impractical to include two cheapo plastic cups. Really?

This is a great kit packed with information.

However the included LED light saber can be a hazard as the light coming from tip is too powerful and kids (or even adults) who would be temped to look into it could be hurting their eyes.

Also I have a suggestion for small improvement. They include small red, green and blue transparent sheets that are supposed to be cut up for the Kaleidoscope. Instead I found these to be valuable to show how white light (say sunlight) passing through these sheets will become colored. These are also useful to show how different colors can be overlapped to create new colors. Seems a much neater way to explain the concept rather than mixing messy colored liquids (not inlcuded in the kit, anyway).

Otherwise, this is an awesome kit.

They were 5 and 7 this summer, when I brought this toy to them. They seemed to know all the experiments, and to find them boring rather than stimulating. I should have found more about the science wiz light kit, and about what they already knew. The truth is that i thought it was going to be more playful, and I did not find it that engaging either.

My 6 year old son loves this science kit. It contains some very well thought out activities with easy to follow instructions (although, for a 6 year old, you're oging to be helping along). Not just a toy...it really does teach some fundamental physics.

Having purchased the Light kit, I'm going to get some more of them.

Oh, and by the way, the grown-ups will probably like playing with this kit as well :-)

For the rpice, you just can't go wrong in my opinion.

This kit may look fun, but it is very deceiving. The light sticks pictured on the cover shows two large objects, when in fact, the kit only contains one, very small, light stick (the size of a child's hand). I returned it as soon as I received it. The contents inside were covered with white dust that had leaked out of an exploded battery. In addition, the motor simply did not work no matter how we tried to connect it, and we tried several different ways to get it to work. I'm very disappointed in this product and its packaging, given its previous positive reviews.

You get what you pay for - that is true. It did keep the kids busy for a few hours. But then it was tossed aside. OK quality as long as you do not abuse the inexpensive plastic parts. Interesting experiments, that are all in one place - but these are nothing new and can all be found on the internet easily. A good gift for a 6-10 year old who is interested in experiments.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Gift to Make Learning Fun

This was purchased as a gift for a young boy and boy let me tell you this was the perfect gift that was fun to create and use but also brought out a whole new way to learn while having fun.

It may seem expensive to some but its worth it. The book comes with all the materials to create the product.

I would not recommend for any child under 8 though as you have to follow the instructions step by step and if its something you want your child to do and explore on their own than 8 is the perfect age but if you are going to do it with them than under 8 is fine.

It was a definite win.
