Eliminate old-school punishments and create a community of responsible, productive learners

Are you or your teachers frustrated with carrots and sticks, detention rooms, and suspension--antiquated school discipline practices that simply do not work with the students entering our classrooms today? Our kids have complex needs, and we must empower and embrace them with restorative practices that not only change behaviors but transform students into productive citizens, accountable for their own actions.

Replace traditional school discipline with a proven system, founded on restorative justice

In a book that should become your new blueprint for school discipline, teachers, presenters, and school leaders Nathan Maynard and Brad Weinstein demonstrate how to eliminate punishment and build a culture of responsible students and independent learners. In Hack Learning Series Book 22, you learn to:

  • Reduce repeated negative behaviors
  • Build student self-regulation and empathy
  • Enhance communication and collaboration
  • Identify the true cause of negative behaviors
  • Use restorative circles to reflect on behaviors and discuss impactful change

"Maynard and Weinstein provide practical tips and strategies in the context of real-world examples, guided by the imperatives of changing the behavior and preserving the relationship. An important read for teachers and administrators." -Danny Steele, award-winning principal and co-author of Essential Truths for Principals and Essential Truths for Teachers

Before you suspend another student ...

read Hacking School Discipline, and build a school environment that promotes responsible learners, who never need to be punished. Then watch learning soar, teachers smile, and your entire community rejoice.

Hacking behavior issues with restorative justice
Hacking School Discipline is not only a good read, it's clear, it's well written, and it is immediately of use in the classroom. Too many education books are just about theory. Hacking School Discipline not only says what to do, but also how to do it. In an age when traditional means of discipline clearly don't work, restorative justice is the way to go and this handbook of "how to's" will help you do it. Highly recommend.

I am an assistant principal working in a restorative middle school and this book is spot on!! The other books on restorative practices are good but this one truly is the best. It is an easy read and very teacher friendly. I originally got it for my kindle but quickly bought a paperback so I could highlight and take notes!!

This book was incredibly helpful. I teach middle school, and only bought it because it was an Amazon recommendation. We have been transitioning from traditional discipline to a system that emphasizes rebuilding the relationship after misbehavior. This book has nine chapters, each of which details extremely practical things you can actually do right away. While the scenarios are very specific, they also are ones that any teacher would recognize. I liked the book so much, l lent it to our school counselor who then passed it on to our vice principal. We all think it should be required reading for everyone in our school.

Hacking School Discipline is a game changer for schools seeking to move away from power over and punitive consequences. HSD provides a "with" approach to creating a safe and thriving school culture. Brad and Nathan provide practical hacks that can be implemented within the classroom and school environment the next day. This book has changed my thinking around discipline and has reminded me of what our most important work is as educators-building relationships.

I am a school Principal, and this book is an Easy read which is critical for educators who have to read all day and they don't want anything that is not: 1) engaging, 2) easy to read, 3) entertaining, 4) has graphics and artifacts to enhance comprehension and 5) not redundant (they haven't had a PD on this before...) . My staff is doing a book study on this now and I only bought a copy for each of them as a Christmas present! I was thrilled they wanted to implement the restorative practices immediately! Can I get a discount on a bulk purchase?

Although this book has good advice, I take question at the book’s tone. The authors seem to think that they have discovered the perfect form of discipline and that anything other than their method is outdated, wrong, or even damaging. I personally do not believe that any one discipline solution works for every school, teacher, and student, so a little humility on the part of the authors would have been appreciated. However, if this is not something that bothers you, you can get a lot out of this book.

This book is easy to read with very practical applications that a teacher can put in place immediately and the school can implement and embed long-term. The authors have done a great job at writing a book for all educators displaying their experience in real schools.
