Top review from the United States

I own a robotics school and I was looking for resources outside of Lego to teach Mindstorms. My intention is to find lessons that can quickly create an experience for my students to embody the understanding of how sensors make robots smart, rather than the building of a large, lengthy, perfect robot as Lego's curriculum was for my students. I like learning through using the entire body, not just with your mind or just hands. One lesson from Leanne's book that I will definitely do in my class is, start with a physical exercise of walking closer and closer to the wall so you can touch it with your nose and notice how your eyes are on constant vigilance. She compares this experience with the need to use a sensor block within a wait block. I know, it's possibly easier simply to tell kids to always write codes in a certain way, but having this embodied understanding added shades of integration for me. Her book really is written in a conversational style; I found it mesmerizing and I kept reading on as she is talking to just me. There is a lot of white space, and lots of simple quizzes and I was involved in recalling things I learned a few pages back. As a neuroscientist, I would love to teach my students some hard core robotics straight-away, but my experience with this book shows kids really need a friendlier entry into robotics, something more concrete than word explanations. Leanne really understands how kids think. They don't like complicated, they like fun, they like conversations with a teacher, they want to be silly from time to time. I have bought soooooo many Mindstorms books, filled full with words from top to bottom and in double columns, but I rarely see a kid in my class open one of those books to digest them. This one is my favorite. It builds such a solid foundation with ease and a kid-centered approach. Thank you. rbc
