First let me say that I did not read anyone elses' reviews, recently, that is. I didn't want to be influenced, lol, so if any of my problems have been solved by other writers, please forgive me. I used this jerky gun tonite to whip up about 5 pounds (wet) of deer jerky. I used it off and on for about 1 hour. This thing is great. The only bad things are fairly minor, and 1 is nit-picky. The first thing is the yellow/orange release button is somewhat hard to push to release the plunger in order to pull the plunger back. The second thing is there is a lump of meat left in the fitting on the end of the shooter at the end of the process. I had to fish the lump out with a butter knife and make little clumps of jerky by hand. I am going to write the manufacturer and ask them if they have a plastic plug that can be used with each fitting to push the last of the meat out of the nozzles, regardless of which nozzle is used. This shooter is very powerful and measured. By that I mean I never had any clogs or uneven strips--it has the power to push meat out at a precise rate. Cleanup was great. Soap and hot water, and everything cleaned up great. One word of caution, when you get to the end of a load, don't force it. Just accept this is the end of this load, and re-load. If you force it, it's harder to get the plunger button pushed in to release. I had a cleaper jerky shooter (the red plastic one) that I bought in a kit about 10 years ago. This is like comparing nite and day, and you can fit about 2x as much jerky into this Weston gun. If I ever have any problems with this unit, I will come back and post. Again, this is a great jerky gun!
I started making jerky a year ago and tried several different ways of extruding the meat into the dehydrator. First, I used a cake icing piping bag. I thought I was pretty clever and frugal. But it was like arm wrestling to get the meat out the small piping tip I had. Then I tried rolling the meat mixture between two sheets of waxed paper and cutting it into strips to put into the dehydrator. It worked but was time consuming and I couldn't re-use the waxed paper.
Finally, I broke down and got this jerky gun.

This is a LARGE jerky gun. It holds at least one pound of meat in a single load and it works like a common caulk gun. All you do is put the meat in the barrel, screw on the double barrelled tip and start pumping the gun. In just a few pumps the meat will start extruding - so effortlessly that you will gasp in surprise. At least I did.
All I could think is... where has this jerky gun been all my life? I would never make jerky without it or tell anyone else to without recommending this gun. I make mine in two pound batches and this gun will hold 1 pound plus on the first load and a refill to finish the batch. It is smooth to operate and easy to clean.
Don't hesitate. If you are gonna make jerky from ground meat - this needs to be part of your equipment. It is well made and fun. In fact, it is large and makes a girl feel quite powerful. Get it now!
I agree with most other reviews for this product. It is great, and works good, but the quality could be a bit better. The main reason I am writing this review, is to comment on the attachments for shaping the extruded jerky. In a quick summary, I give the gun itself a 5 star review, but the attachments a 2 star review. The big attachment that extrudes two flat strips simulataneously is worthless. The crimp in the middle that is supposed to seperate the two strips doesn't even come fully together. This results in one piece of extruded meat, with the meat being really thin in the middle of the strip that connects what should be two seperate strips of meat. When drying the meat, this middle section becomes over dried and brittle while drying the thicker portions of the meat to the correct stage. At this point, the two strips of meat seperate easily by snapping it apart, but that leaves each strip of meat with an over dried, crunchy, and even sharp edge. I only used it once, and will not use it again. Now, about the rest of the attachemnts: The round single and double both work fine. They work well, but I prefer the flat strips of jerky. The single flat strip extruder (shown attached to the jerky gun in the picture) is only about 5/8" wide and 1/8" thick. This is too small in my opinion. When I did 2.5 lbs of meat, it filled up about 6 large dehydrator trays. Also, because they are so small, it only takes 2-3 hours to dry. The first time I did it, I check it after 4 hours, and they were brittle. I stored them with some bread to soften them up a little. The dried product is really small and thin. I always folded each piece in half, so it was like biting into two strips at the same time. This lead me to regretting that I bought this jerky gun. I should have bought a gun that came with different attachments. However, after some searching around, I found a compatible jerky nozzle attachemnt, sold seperately, at lemproducts.com. It extrudes much bigger strips 1 3/16" X 3/16". This basically is the same size as one of the double strip extruded meat. Now I am satisfied with my jerky gun. That said, if i had to do it all over again, I would probably just buy Lem's jerky cannon. I haven't actually seen it myself, but it looks near identical to the weston jerky gun, but perhaps even better quality (says an aluminum barrel). It only comes with two attachments, but they are the only two I would want to use. That would cost about the same as buying the weston jerky gun, and then also ordering the better size extruded attachment.
My father and I have been making jerky for a few years. During that time we went through two of those cheaper plastic jerky guns. While searching for yet another one I saw this product on Amazon. It is of course more expensive than the plastic jerky guns but we decided to spend a bit more for a better one. We are very impressed! All of the key parts of it are made of steel, not plastic, including the tube and the nozzles. The little round thing that pushes the meat out (which was usually the first thing to break on the plastic guns) is a rubber disk sandwiched between two steel disks for support. It has a larger capacity and holds almost 2 lbs of ground meat. It comes with a handy funnel and plunger to get the meat into the tube with less mess. It fully disassembles for cleaning and comes with two bottle brushes.
If you often make jerky and are looking for a good sturdy jerky gun, then I would definitely recommend this one! It is well worth the extra money.
I have recently purchased this gun and after using it for the first time thought it did extremely well. After watching many similar jerky guns over the internet, people say this one was the best one that you could get on the market. The others seem too cheap and have too much plastic. This one is the tough, KING of all jerky guns. Now I only giving it 4 stars because I would have liked a clear see through strip running along the tube to show me how much meat I had left. (maybe a future update) If you love jerky and think you're going to make it time and time again then don't waste your money on the cheaper guns, go for the Weston.
Best jerky I've used - I tried several cheaper models and constantly had problems, spend a little more and buy a quality item like this, it will be the last jerky gun you will need. I've had mine for a few years now and haven't had any issues.
Excellent professional kitchen quality tool. However, the hopper/tube is huge...quite long and hard to handle if you have limited hand / arm control. I bought the smaller model the 37-0201 Original Jerky Gun Jr. so, another family member can use the larger one. You will be impressed.
