Decent VHF at a good price
Decent VHF at a good price. I installed it on a 40' sailboat and connected it to the chart plotter's NMEA0183 output to receive the position, SOG, and COG, it all works well. I also hooked the RAM3+ extension mic to it to be able to make calls from the cockpit. The only downside, in my opinion, is the relatively low sound quality of the speaker.

This is a good radio for the money; sturdy, good sound, good functionality, not overly complicated to use. Got it to replace a Uniden that died a premature death. To use the DSC function on this radio you'll need to interface it to your GPS or chartplotter - this one uses NMEA 183 which is basically RS-232, and doesn't interface directly with NMEA 2000 systems. If you've got an NMEA 183 GPS already, then this is a great choice. If you don't have one, consider the GX1700 instead, which is basically the same radio but with a GPS builtin, so no interfacing necessary to get DSC functionality. The optional cover is worth the extra to protect it between uses.

My husband and I regularly sail with two other couples in the Pensacola, Florida bay, intracoastal and gulf. One of the guys has been limping along (poor manning it) with a radio that was driving us crazy. In order to hear him talking, you had to put the microphone right next to your ear. So for his birthday, we chipped in on a Standard Horizon Marine Radio and a RAM3 unit for the helm. Boy did that do the trick. My husband has been sailing for over 40 years and Standard Horizon was his #1 choice. Love the distress call and GPS features, a great upgrade. Thanks for a dependable product at a reasonable price.

Strongest and clearest signal of any radio I've used on my boat or anyone else's. This will be the only brand I use moving forward.

My wife and I were in a situation where our boat capsized after taking on water; I was able to rattle off coordinates to the CG in time, and the Sheriffs said they thought I was right outside the harbor because my signal was so clear; I was 15 miles south of the harbor.

Screen is dead after 9 months. Inside the cabinet on the covered fly ridge. All I asked is that it would last a few years. Standard horizon just said send it back even though I am in Central America and i will have to buy a new one anyway.

Great radio! Easy to set up & install. I got a 8' Shakespeare antena for it & it works great! Also it's extremely water resilient as mine is installed in an open top zodiac & is constantly wet. Very loud, can heat it when my outboard is at wine open throttle.
