StudScan and DeepScan - Center and Edge Finding Stud Finding ModeThe SS 70's StudScan and DeepScan modes locate the edges and center of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors and ceilings. StudScan finds shallower wood or metal studs up to .75 of an inch (19 mm) deep while DeepScan doubles the scanning depth to 1.5 inches (38 mm). Make sure to note whether the WireWarning Detection is alerting to live, unshielded AC wiring before drilling into the center of the stud. |
WireWarning DetectionWireWarning Detection is a feature that is always on while you are scanning in StudScan and DeepScan modes. It alerts you to the presence of live, unshielded, electrical AC wires up to 2 inches (50 cm) deep. The WireWarning LED illuminates when the SS70 detects live AC voltage. If scanning begins over a live AC electrical wire, the WireWarning LED flashes continuously. Note: Please turn off the electricity and use extreme caution in areas where live AC voltage is detected before nailing or drilling. |
Integrated Wall MarkerThe SS 70's integrated erasable marker allows easy, one-handed operation. When the target is found, simply push down on the 'mark' button. The pencil marks the surface without interrupting the scan. The SS 70 comes with a pencil pre-installed, and refills in the box. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Does the stud finder need to be calibrated?
Answer: Yes the StudSensor 70 needs to calibrate to the surface before scanning. Calibrating the stud finder on an empty wall gives the device a chance to measure the wall thickness and material density, as well as register factors like humidity, temperature, and even the minor electric readings from your hand, which all have an impact on the readings from the wall.
Question: How can I be certain the objects found behind my wall are studs in DeepScan mode?
Answer: DeepScan mode has increased sensitivity so you may have located something other than a stud. Studs are equally spaced to either side (12, 16, or 24 in. apart) and typically run from floor to ceiling.
Question: What is Auto Correcting Technology (ACT)?
Answer: Auto Correcting Technology (ACT) is a feature that enables the tool to automatically adjust for common calibration errors. It checks calibration 10 times per second and automatically recalibrates when/if needed.

Product Description
The Zircon StudSensor 70 center finding electronic wall scanner comes loaded with the latest technology in density detecting software and circuitry. Using the patented CenterVision technology, the SS 70 easily locates the center and edges of wood and metal studs and joists behind walls, floors, and in ceilings with just one pass. The specialized SpotLite Pointing System and an audio tone indicate the location of the target. In StudScan mode, the SS70 locates the center and edges of shallower wood or metal studs up to 3/4 of an inch (19 mm) deep. Switch over to DeepScan mode by quickly pressing the Power Button twice to double the scanning depth to 1.5 inches (38 mm). The StudSensor 70 is programmed with a WireWarning Detection feature that indicates the presence of live unshielded electrical wires up to 2 inches (50 mm) deep when using both stud scan modes. The SS 70 also comes equipped with a built-in erasable marker enabling you to mark the hazards or studs with the simple push of a button. To get started, install one brand new 9V alkaline battery (not included). Place the unit flat against the wall and calibrate it. Once you hear the calibration beep and see the “Ready” LED light, continue to hold the Power Button and slowly slide the tool across the surface. As the stud detector approaches the edge of a stud, the red LEDs progressively light from the bottom up in both scanning modes. The top lighted “Center” LED, SpotLite Pointing System, and audio tone all indicate when the stud’s center is found. Make sure to note whether the WireWarning Detection is alerting to live, unshielded AC wiring before drilling between the two marks into the center of the stud. Now delivered to you in our Amazon exclusive easy to open packaging with no clam shells and no twist ties, the SS 70 is ready for use just seconds after you receive it. With the Zircon StudSensor 70, you can safely maneuver through the most complicated of projects with the professional confidence that comes from owning a Zircon.

Once I'd tested the stud finder, I went on to use it in my kitchen to hang a pot rack. It found the ceiling joists just fine, and the built in pencil worked well to mark the ceiling.
Some of my walls are lath and plaster, some are drywall. It will NOT work on plaster walls. But most studfinders won't... So I can't really knock it for that... It'll still find the wires in those walls, but it won't find the studs. Overall, your mileage may vary, if you have 1/4" drywall over old plaster walls it probably won't work well for you. The walls in my house that are drywall look like they were all knocked out and replaced with standard 5/8 drywall, which I can say it works well on.
I've used a lot worse stud finders before... So overall I think this one works just fine for my purposes, unlike some others I've tried this one seems to work. I can't speak to everyone's situation, like how it would perform with metal studs (Which are common for commercial), or other oddball walls.
On hand, we had an old Red Black and Decker laser leveling tool and stud finder and this fancy, highly touted Zircon SS 70. So highly touted that I'm a little fearful of reprisals for writing this. We got this tool because of its "deep scanning" and marking features, and the desire for something better than our 1990's era Black and Decker. Out of 30 studs in walls of one room that had double drywall, the Zircon located three studs, as well as several places that had live electrical wires adjacent to a recepticle. The Black and Decker located five studs in spite of its lack of fancy "deep scanning" features. We tried the Zircon on some old areas that had only single layer 1/2" drywall with fair to good results.
We remembered that drywall screws and nails are magnetic. We thought of just using a magnet, but then wondered about iPhone apps and the compass. Yes! Turns out that a free magnetometer app for the iPhone 6 located EVERY stud quickly and accurately. Since the iPhone has to be moved over screws that could be above the marking point, we attached a small washer on a string from the back of the iPhone to act as a plumb bob. Free, reliable, easy to use, and no false positives.
The Zircon will find wooden studs under drywall without nails or screws (sure, glued-on drywall walls do exist). It does locate power (but then again, above and below a receptacle one will usually find a stud and power - no mystery). We did not try the $1.29 magnetic pointer type stud finder from the big box store, but I'd guess it would have worked okay too.
We really disliked the need to put tape on our freshly painted light-colored flat walls or drag a tool directly on the wall. The iPhone (or Android I'm sure has such a thing too) method works without tape or touching the wall.
All electronic stud finders should have a variable sensitivity magnetic mode as well, with instructions to the user that in such a mode, one is searching for the fasteners on the wall instead of the studs directly.
I'm knocking two stars because reliable results were not obtained on double drywall as claimed.
Most people don't have double layers of 5/8" drywall, but many people have a need for it in this noisey and distracting world. The Zircon SS 70 works fine on thin drywall and maybe even lime and lath type plaster walls.
Two stars overall due to poor value, one false claim, having to either tape or rub nice clean walls with an electronic device. Zircon could have a much better product for the money if they would test and refine the tool and provide some kind of variable sensitivity and programming to include field strength analysis from multiple inputs.
Edit: One more star added because Zircon responded to my review. Sometimes, having a company that cares is at least some consolation for a product that doesn't work. An offer to refund or, better still, send a product that scans double layer drywall, or 5/8 drywall without having to use tape to cover the wall, etc. would be a better response from the customer point of view.
But it does great at finding electrical wires!

I'm a Professional Sign installer when I need studs to install heavy Acrylic Signs this tool finds them accurately from the edges to the center sturd, also finds AC on the wall and the bonus part of it it comes with a marker.
And if I install light PVC letters I dont need studs for my pinmounts, this tool finds them again.. Alas the best tool money can buy..
It has found every stud so far. Tip: if you don't get a reading, move higher or lower on the wall and start again.
