Whistler CR93 High Performance Laser Radar Detector: 360 Degree Protection, Bilingual Voice Alerts, and Internal GPS

From the manufacturer

Whistler CR Series Laser Radar Detectors

The Whistler CR series laser radar detectors are a high performance, professional grade dash models which detect all new lasers used in North America. Each CR series model detects X band, K band, Super Wideband Ka, and laser protection - the only 4 bands used for speed measurement. They also feature POP Mode detection, an advanced speed detection capability that responds to brief bursts of radar.

Equipped with 360° Maxx Coverage which provides complete perimeter protection, detecting signals from the front, sides, and rear. Traffic Flow Signal Rejection (TFSR) helps eliminate alerts from radar based traffic flow sensors. It features 3 city modes/highway modes (City, City 1, and City 2) to reduce the annoyance of false alerts.

Standard Features Include:

  • High Gain Lens: Provides an increased field of view, as well as a longer range of detection
  • Alert Priority: Displays the most important signal when more than one is detected
  • Safety Warning System: Keeps you informed of highway saftey where transmitters are located
  • Stay Alert: Test your alertness on long trips

Alert Periscope

Flashing LED lights provide an additional visual notification.

Digital Display

Each model is equipped with either an OLED display or a color icon display with numeric signal strength indicator.

Components

Each laser radar detector includes a windshield bracket kit, a 12V DC power cord, and an instruction manual.

Whistler Intellicord

Select CR models are compatible with the Whistler Intellicord (sold separately). The Intellicord offers an upgrade to the standard 12V DC power cord and allows users to remotely control power on/off, city modes, dim/dark, and quiet/auto quiet settings.

Great detector I pushed it to the limit?
Got reassigned from nc to Alaska and had to drive one of my two cars myself to get there, it was brutal but here is how it worked.my configs: all bands on KA set to maxid, tfsr on, no pop. I traveled at a minimum 10 over max 20 overNC- nothingVA- cops everywhere thing picked every single one of them around corners and hills, had to set it on the dash cause its illegal there much harder to see and it still worked well.WV- nothing meaning didn't see copsOhio- nothingIndianapolis-nothingIllinois- this one was hot cops and traffic cams, first and only full x band from a state trooper, also laser but Chicago traffic was so busy I can't see any cop chasing someone without getting killed.Wisconsin- decided to turn on pop mode big mistake, it greatly reduces the range please use that one at your own risk, don't know why I didn't get pulled over there.Minnesota- only state where I passed cops and nothing went off don't know if they are personally looking for speeders and then turn their radar on as soon as you pass, they all wait in the center median so keep eyes open.North dakota- one cop trying to hide at a gas station it's so open out there the Whistler has unbelievable range, was FLYING!!!Montana- cops use the old Texas technique where they all drive on the other side of the highway clocking traffic passing them across the median, as soon as you speed pass them they 180 around the median and get you. Your range is reduce with this technique but so are theres, your driving 70 the cop is driving 70 the other way with 140 difference, you must be quick here to stop as soon as the cr90 warns you.Idaho- nothingWashington- cops use laser here and traffic cams are EVERYWHERE, still speed through it though most cops use ka. Lots of unmarked cop cars though so be carefulAlaska- few cops open range lots of mountains cops can't really hideCanada- speed limit was 55 for 400 miles of nothing drove 70 and picked off one cop passing me.I say this was a great investment for the price, just because you see the cop in the distance when the cr90 goes off does not mean he has you yet I am a prime example of that for sure. Make sure you mount it mid way on windshield not low it reduces range. The KA-ID is the best feature as well as the custom features selection. Must be careful in metro areas. Don't blare music or wear headphones/blue tooth to the point that you can't hear the system go off you only have a second or two stay alert.

Whistler makes two performance levels of detectors, with the CR 65, CR 70, and CR 75 being the base models and the CR 80, CR 85, and CR 90 being high performance models.

I ordered a CR 70 from Amazon Warehouse Deals for less than half the market price, and my detector still had the plastic film on the front and back with the cord still in a sealed bag. This was a new "open box" item.

The performance of the CR70 seems identical with my previous XTR-335, which is the model the CR-70 replaced.
The new unit does have traffic signal rejection and detects newer lasers, and may have other subtle improvements I'm not aware of. But the basic Whistler radar detectors are incredibly capable radar detectors in their own right, just as they have been for several years.

For only about fifty dollars for the CR-65 series (CR-70 adds voice for about $75 and for about $100 the CR-75 adds voice and OLED digital display----but performance is all the same) anybody who wants a radar detector more capable than detectors that used to sell for several hundred dollars a decade or more ago.

The basic Whistlers today will detect Ka band radar on straight roads for at least two miles or more. K band range is over a mile. X band isn't used much anymore, but it's there if your local police still use X band. These units are limited by hills and curves, and by the radar being shot forward,,,,but so are all radar detectors. They still work in those situations but range (and warning time) is reduced.

The CR-80, CR-85, and CR-90 Whistlers may offer improved range and certainly provide more features. For that you pay about $100 for the CR-80 (Base icon display) $135 for the CR-85 (full featured OLED display and $180 for the top of the line CR-90 that adds GPS and a free updateable web based system to alert for red light cameras and to mark locations yourself where speed traps operate. Range on the upper end Whistlers is supposed to be better.

Yet the range and performance of my late model base model Whistlers is excellent. Detection of Ka band at well over a mile on the highway (even "instant on" bursts) is the rule not the exception.

Police radar is much more powerful than speed signs and automatic door openers. In the real world driving experience, the basic under $100 Whistler models give incredibly good warnings of actual police radar, with a minimum of false alerts.

Whistler does not make the best radar detectors. But they do make by far and away the best cheap radar detectors, and they are useful , good, reliable, and attractive units that can be plugged in and go right to work sniffing out police radar.

They are not "cop car detectors". No detector can save you from being the first target of laser or "instant on " radar, either.

They are entertaining gadgets that may save you from inadvertently driving into a speed trap, though. They do work, and work far better than the detectors of only a few years ago.

And you can buy a really good Whistler for about the price of a full tank of gas.

    (Ain't technology marvelous?)

I spent a lot of time researching for a radar detector. I know the best ones I should have bought but I cant afford it. This new model is an updated version of the 78SE, which many people love. I was going to get the 78SE model here on Amazon but then I realized that version is 3-4 years old, it didn't have the OLED screen which was last year model. I found this CR85 and bought it because 1) it is brand new, summer 2013 release 2) some people on forums are speculating the same inner parts as 78SE 3) It actually cost less than a 78SE

    Impression

    7/9
    1) Got 2 Ka hit in the city, I was able to spot one cop, the other one I couldnt find (radar detector was able to spot it from a good distance)
    2) City mode is pretty quiet (beside from the occasional supermarket door, which you can then turn off K or X band, eliminating those)
    3) Mounting bracket is good

I haven't used it on the Highway yet, but I will soon with a few long trips later in the summer and fall. (will update later)

Warning: This is a radar detector and not a police detector. Most cop don't have their radar on. So still drive carefully. This is a fun tool for me to keep my drives interesting.

8/7: Used the CR85 on the drive to Atlanta from FL about 8hrs drive. This thing accurately pointed out a few LEO using radar and a few Lasers to and from. I am very impressed by the range (radar detector gave plenty of warning time). Definitely saved me and my friends some money

    New Update
12/3: I have been using this for almost 6 months with plenty of highway miles. I so recommend it. It just saved me 2x so far by alerting me to hidden cops on I-95 in GA going from FL to NC. Other drivers looked at me like I was crazy braking but I knew what was happening ahead. This definitely saved me because I was speeding. Before that trip, I used it driving from FL to TN and to AL and it definitely saved me a few times thanks to the alert.
Some down side: I found that it has a tendency to pick up random K band on the highway and I can never find the LEO (rumors of a K band issue has been happening with many Whistler models, you can read about on forums) but Ka band is very accurate so if Ka comes on I slow down, Cobra radar detectors are notorious for setting off other radar detector K band, check out youtube if you dont believe me so it can also be a passing car. But that is minor inconvenience

One tip, do not leave it on your car in the sun, take it down and protect it. Plus I feel like this protect the suction cups too.

This is by no mean a foolproof detector so speed carefully!!

    good luck!
