I ordered a CR 70 from Amazon Warehouse Deals for less than half the market price, and my detector still had the plastic film on the front and back with the cord still in a sealed bag. This was a new "open box" item.
The performance of the CR70 seems identical with my previous XTR-335, which is the model the CR-70 replaced.
The new unit does have traffic signal rejection and detects newer lasers, and may have other subtle improvements I'm not aware of. But the basic Whistler radar detectors are incredibly capable radar detectors in their own right, just as they have been for several years.
For only about fifty dollars for the CR-65 series (CR-70 adds voice for about $75 and for about $100 the CR-75 adds voice and OLED digital display----but performance is all the same) anybody who wants a radar detector more capable than detectors that used to sell for several hundred dollars a decade or more ago.
The basic Whistlers today will detect Ka band radar on straight roads for at least two miles or more. K band range is over a mile. X band isn't used much anymore, but it's there if your local police still use X band. These units are limited by hills and curves, and by the radar being shot forward,,,,but so are all radar detectors. They still work in those situations but range (and warning time) is reduced.
The CR-80, CR-85, and CR-90 Whistlers may offer improved range and certainly provide more features. For that you pay about $100 for the CR-80 (Base icon display) $135 for the CR-85 (full featured OLED display and $180 for the top of the line CR-90 that adds GPS and a free updateable web based system to alert for red light cameras and to mark locations yourself where speed traps operate. Range on the upper end Whistlers is supposed to be better.
Yet the range and performance of my late model base model Whistlers is excellent. Detection of Ka band at well over a mile on the highway (even "instant on" bursts) is the rule not the exception.
Police radar is much more powerful than speed signs and automatic door openers. In the real world driving experience, the basic under $100 Whistler models give incredibly good warnings of actual police radar, with a minimum of false alerts.
Whistler does not make the best radar detectors. But they do make by far and away the best cheap radar detectors, and they are useful , good, reliable, and attractive units that can be plugged in and go right to work sniffing out police radar.
They are not "cop car detectors". No detector can save you from being the first target of laser or "instant on " radar, either.
They are entertaining gadgets that may save you from inadvertently driving into a speed trap, though. They do work, and work far better than the detectors of only a few years ago.
And you can buy a really good Whistler for about the price of a full tank of gas.
(Ain't technology marvelous?)
Impression
7/9
1) Got 2 Ka hit in the city, I was able to spot one cop, the other one I couldnt find (radar detector was able to spot it from a good distance)
2) City mode is pretty quiet (beside from the occasional supermarket door, which you can then turn off K or X band, eliminating those)
3) Mounting bracket is good
I haven't used it on the Highway yet, but I will soon with a few long trips later in the summer and fall. (will update later)
Warning: This is a radar detector and not a police detector. Most cop don't have their radar on. So still drive carefully. This is a fun tool for me to keep my drives interesting.
8/7: Used the CR85 on the drive to Atlanta from FL about 8hrs drive. This thing accurately pointed out a few LEO using radar and a few Lasers to and from. I am very impressed by the range (radar detector gave plenty of warning time). Definitely saved me and my friends some money
New Update
12/3: I have been using this for almost 6 months with plenty of highway miles. I so recommend it. It just saved me 2x so far by alerting me to hidden cops on I-95 in GA going from FL to NC. Other drivers looked at me like I was crazy braking but I knew what was happening ahead. This definitely saved me because I was speeding. Before that trip, I used it driving from FL to TN and to AL and it definitely saved me a few times thanks to the alert.
Some down side: I found that it has a tendency to pick up random K band on the highway and I can never find the LEO (rumors of a K band issue has been happening with many Whistler models, you can read about on forums) but Ka band is very accurate so if Ka comes on I slow down, Cobra radar detectors are notorious for setting off other radar detector K band, check out youtube if you dont believe me so it can also be a passing car. But that is minor inconvenience
One tip, do not leave it on your car in the sun, take it down and protect it. Plus I feel like this protect the suction cups too.
This is by no mean a foolproof detector so speed carefully!!
good luck!
