Pretty solid drone for the money but... (updated again 7-2022)

Pretty solid drone for the money but... (updated again 7-2022)
7/2022 update: Finally bought another hs110d since I now had spare parts. Pretty happy with it- I've learned to not fly in medium to strong winds and if the wind gets too much, remember to increase the speed which helps a lot (but gets trickier to control). I only use headless mode because when the drone gets far away you can't see the lights to know which way it's facing. Camera works but the resolution is poor despite the 1080p claim. It's okay for remembering where you were or to get a view up over the trees but when you blow up the pic on the PC, low resolution becomes very apparent. By the way, the HSS2 FPV App must be running and phone connected to drone's Wifi for pics to download to your phone. You can still take pics/videos without the app running but then have to put an SD card in the drone to later offload to PC. Either way the low pic quality looks the same to me. I tried controlling the drone from the App but couldn't get it to fly (but once got it to start motors), but why bother - the remote is very capable and simple. The app then, is relegated to seeing what the camera is sees and checking the battery. The drone is a great flyer (except when windy) but I'm lowering to 4 stars because of disappointing camera resolution and a complicated and finicky App.9/2021 update: Okay, I enjoyed the drone for a good 5 months, before I lost it: Took it out to a big field on a moderately windy day, so I intended to keep it low to the ground. I flew in "headless" mode to eliminate any errors with forward/backward direction. Flew for a few minutes close and low, no problem. But then I mistakenly decided to bring it up high overhead. Next I knew it was drifting away in stronger wind currents and despite raising to full speed and pulling back the control, by now it was some 300 ft away and heading towards a swamp (which I had no idea was there). I tried to land it down but it kept sailing finally into the swamp, about 400 ft from me. In hindsight I should have remembered the "Emergency Stop" to drop it right then, but I think I lost communication prior. I contacted Holy Stone and they do not sell just the drone new or refurbished but did offer me a discount for a new set on Amazon. My advice (again)- DO NOT fly this in anything but light wind, and even then make sure you are in a huge field with no trees (or swamps), and be prepared to use the emergency kill switch.5/3/21 Update: After owning a cheaper no-name drone with the small wired battery packs that didn't last more that 3 or 4 minutes, and having to replace cheap motors, this is a welcomed step up. I've had it a month now and did view a few pics off the SD card (which they don't include)- they were decent quality and in focus but this is no 20 megapixel camera so don't expect great resolution (file size of the pics is less than 1 MB compared to 2 to 4 MB from my phone's camera). Video looked like 1080p quality, fair brightness and color and there was no shakiness (only my jerky trying to center the drone), (by the way, it doesn't record audio).I downloaded the smartphone App mainly for the FPV (first person view) while flying to get better pics. Surprisingly, when using the app (WiFi connected to the drone), you don't need an SD card in the drone- pics will be stored in a folder (HSS2 FPV) on your phone. If you have the SD card installed, pics and videos will be stored there as well. Also handy on the App is the drone's battery indicator (useful when the drone is too far away to see its lights flashing red for low battery). I understand you can fly the drone from the App and use gestures to control it, but I don't see a need for it.I think the battery pack lasted around 10 minutes as advertised. Plug in battery packs were a main selling point as I hated the clunky batt replacement on my last drone, but note that charging can only take place on the drone (so you can't charge the second battery while you're out flying- unless you get a charging base and I think HS sells one with extra batteries). The manual is pretty good, not broken English but they don't get into how to use the App, only how to install (giving a handy QR code) and connect phone to drone.I think Headless Mode is a great feature, especially for beginners, which works as expected. Very handy when the drone is high and far away and you can't tell which direction it is pointing. In this case turn on headless and the drone will come back regardless of which direction it's pointing (assuming the drone is in front of you and you haven't moved your position).I've got two minor gripes: One is weak performance in wind. More than about 5 mph and this thing can get lost in a hurry (I lost control and it hit a house some 100 yards away; another time I had to use emergency stop and it dropped hard on a roof- no damage except for lost prop guards). My advice in wind is don't do it, but if you do, keep it low to the ground because wind currents can be unpredictable higher up, and you might try upping the speed to compensate (which I forgot to try). AND, fly it in a big grassy field with no trees or ponds so you will have time to try and land it if it loses control. Two, the propeller guards fall off, probably because not all the pegs snap in tight. Already lost a few and wasted time looking for them when it crash landed in wind. My advice, unless you plan on putting it back in the box use super glue, and while you're at it, glue the landing rails because they can come loose when holding the drone by them, and maybe put a dab on the camera as that's popped off too.Minor gripes aside, its well worth the $60 or $70, at least compared to my last drone experience. Motors are quiet and strong, lights on the bottom are helpful and is responsive to control (without wind). And others have said that Holy Stone stands behind their products as evidenced by providing a real phone number, so that was a factor in my purchase. Indeed, I contacted HS service via email and they politely agreed to send out replacement prop guards under warranty.

This is a long and honest review, so keep that in mind as you read this.

the TL:DR version - Absolutely worth the price if you're looking for a beginner drone. It's a great drone to ensure that you have the dexterity and ability to fly. Its fun, easy to use and you wont find anything better at the price point.

Long version:

Some background on me, I fly video drones for video projects and racing drones for fun (even though they're technically racing drones I actually do more freestyle flying).

To start, I bought this drone because I wanted to find something that I could use for a "kid flight school" and also just have fun at my nearby park without the worry of losing/breaking one of my really expensive drones.

I wasnt really sure what to expect since I have bought way too many sub $100 drones and ended up returning them after the 1st flight.

Once I opened the box, I was surprised that it looks like a baby version of the Phantom 4, which is not a bad thing. It actually looks good, and I was so happy with all of the extras and spare parts that it brought. One pretty fun surprise was the notebook that came with it, which I have my kid use as a flight log (since a good drone pilot always keeps track of this).

Getting started is pretty easy:

- Charge the Drone

- Read the Manual while the drone is charging

- Grab 4 x AA Batteries for the controller

- Make sure everything is tightened (which is was but my experience with other drones has been bad)

- Once drone is done being charged, press a few buttons and you're ready to fly

As an experienced pilot - I flew the drone indoors, and for the most part, it was stable and did what I wanted. I kind of made it into an indoor quarantine game to be honest.

I also flew the drone outdoors during a calm day, and it worked as good as a more expensive drone. I also got to use some of the added features, and it actually worked pretty well. However, when the wind started blowing, it was time to land and wait for the calm. The app options also seemed to work surprisingly well, but I'll be honest and say, I did not spend too much time on them.

I like to start with the bad:

- The Camera quality could be better, its not bad, but its not great. It's good enough for some standard quality stuff, but again, its a sub $100 drone.

- Outdoor stability was good as long as the wind is calm, but as soon as there is a strong gust it does sway a bit. This is more than likely because its really light, but its one thing to keep in mind.

- Lack of warning beeps or sensors. Since i've been spoiled, these are features that I missed on this drone, but it does make sure that the pilot works on skill.

- Radio distance/range - I'd say about 100-150 ft would be the max comfort zone for this drone.

- AA batteries for the controller - I get why, and that batteries are cheap, but ugh.

Now for the Good:

- Quality - its plastic, but it held up really well when my kid crashed it. We brushed off the leaves, and it took off right after. This is a huge deal for us.

- Flight time was about 8 minutes per battery, which for the size and charge time is really really good.

- I already mentioned that the drone is really light (which kind of sucks with the wind), but it makes it really easy for transport. I basically put it back in the box it came in, then into a backpack and I can ride my bike to the park.

- The included hardware - This is actually awesome, and I cant stress this enough. It even included prop protectors, which is extra for the larger more expensive drones.

- The app features are actually kind of cool, I think im going to check out what the next model up brings

- It was so easy to use, I really didnt even have to read the manual, but im glad I did to learn about the added app features.

- PRICE! Seriously for this price, this is the best bang for buck.

This drone is not for shooting movies, or racing. This is the perfect drone to master the mechanics of how a quadcopter works! Before you upgrade to the next steps use this drone and get comfortable. We've all heard of someone who lost or crashed a $1K drone, and TRUST ME if you start here, you'll know better! Happy Flying!

EDIT ON 30 APRIL 2020:
I am changing my review again, but for very good reason. After I edited my review and said how disappointed I was, A rep named Una from Holy Stone reached out to ME! I’ve never seen customer service do that before, so right off the bat I began to change my mind about the company.

I replied back and walked them through the issue of literally 5 seconds flight time, and after cycling batteries and still having the issue, they believed the problem was the drone, not the batteries. By my second reply to them, they already had a new drone shipped out to me! I did not even ask for a replacement, nor did I reach out to them— but they still went above and beyond, contacted me directly after I changed my review, and sent me a brand new replacement.

The replacement came in this week, and it’s been working flawlessly! Not only am I getting 8-10 minutes flight time per battery, the drone now controls WAY better than the original defective one I had, which pretty much left no doubt that I simply had bad luck and got the ONE defective drone they made (based on other reviews I’m reading, this is NOT a common problem AT ALL, so don’t get deterred by it!).

So now I can definitively say, now that I have battery life AND a drone that performs as intended (with both battery life AND controls), that this is simply, without a doubt, the best drone that you can buy at this price point, and may be one of the best entry level drones I’ve ever flown. And if you order it and something is wrong, believe me, they WILL make it right!

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
Lastly, thank you to Una, the rep that contacted me and made this right. Nothing builds loyalty more than feeling like you are valued as a customer, and I honestly cannot recall a time where any company rep has made me feel more valued as a customer than she did! THANK YOU!!

As with everything else in life, you get what you pay for. Is it a DJI Phantom? Of course not. Is it one of the best you can get for under $60? Beyond a doubt.

I’ve flown everything at the entry level, and thought nothing could beat my Tello... until this came in. Easy to control, easy to fly, and very durable (arguably one of the most important aspects of entry level drones), not to mention that you’ll be up in the air in minutes right out of the box.

Bottom line... I love it!

EDIT ON 30 MARCH 2020:
The drone still flies great, the video quality is still awesome for the price point, but the one area in which I did see an issue?... the battery life. When streaming the video over the wifi to your phone, the battery life is incredibly short. By incredibly short, I mean less than 60 seconds of flight time per charge. And no matter what I do, even when I charge over night, the battery would never reach a full charge (it does not give a percentage, but it topped out at what looked like 90% or so, judging by the battery icon in the app once it connected.)

I figured that there will always be one or two that slip through QA, and decided to give it another chance, because it IS a GREAT drone in EVERY other aspect. So I ordered a new battery direct from Amazon, which had the item sold by Holy Stone, the same as the drone was. After a couple days of waiting, I fully charged the new battery and had high hopes. But upon trying it with this new battery, the battery life problem persisted. It still will not get to 100% charge no matter how long I leave it charging for, and the battery life is still less than 60 seconds.

Now, I WILL say that the battery life does jump up to 2-3 minutes when you are not connected to the drone and recording/taking photos to the micro-sd. BUT, even then, this is way less than the 10-minutes on the description. Unless I somehow got TWO batteries that never should have passed thru their Quality Assurance, this is an amazing drone that falls short in what is arguably the most important aspect: power. Without power, you cannot have anything else, and even with 2 fully charged batteries, we get less than 120 seconds (TOTAL) of live video with it. Very, very disappointing.

And one more issue that has brought down my rating: I responded to their request in the box to leave a good review for them and show them the screenshot to get the free extra battery. It has been nearly a month, and I have not received anything other than an email that pretty much only said "thanks".

Again, I will say it is an amazing drone in EVERY other aspect, and that is why I will not say it deserves one star. But when two fully charged batteries get me less than five minutes of flight time, I cannot in good conscience recommend this to anyone. There are similar drones I personally own that will give me 5-10x the flight time with live video, at a similar price point. Hopefully they will make batteries that can store more than 1000mAh, which would make this be well above five stars.
