My 9-year old perspective: Easy to use with some hiccups that you can overcome with patience
The 3D Printer is well built and has all the capabilities you need for a hobbyist or a beginner. My 9-year old son came up to speed quickly, and he operates it without adult supervision. Because it is enclosed, it is safer than open models from competitors. My son enjoys designing on TinkerCad and printing it on the Printer. Now some things to remember:Since 3D printing is still not hit the mainstream, this Printer, like many others, needs special attention. We print during the day say we can keep an eye on it.We had quite a few failed prints, and we were able to reduce those through trial and error. Here are few things we learned:* When we used Dremel's 3D slicer software, our success rate was much lower. The .gcode files it generates do not work all the time.* If you use the 3D Cloud software, it creates .3gdrem files, and they have a higher success rate.* Depending on the design, we need to try out different support types to get it right.* On Dremel's support team's suggestion, we also had to increase the extrusion head height so the filament does not back up into the head and clog it.Filament:Not all filaments are the same in terms of generating quality prints. PETG (esp translucent) gets stuck in the spool a lot, causing failed prints. We have had more luck with ECO-ABS and PLA.Technical Support:Dremel's support is excellent. They are quite helpful in debugging issues and very friendly.Educational material:The educational material is designed for a classroom setting where a skilled teacher is leading the class. We were hoping we could learn how best to design 3D objects at home but to no avail. There were no instructions on how to get good prints, either. It only includes a series of exercises and is not worth the additional $200.

The Dremel 3D45-EDU 3D printer is easy to use with almost no set-up. It was well packed for shipment which caused a bit of concern on how to get the packing material out of the machine without causing damage. We quickly found a video that suggested it was OK to gently lift up on the print head module to get it out of the way. Then we were able to remove the last of the packaging.
We like that the Dremel filament reels come with an RFID chip that tells the machine how to make all necessary adjustments for the type of material used. The guided leveling and automatic calibration of the build plate are well worthwhile. The enclosure is sturdy and helps keep the work area at the proper temperature. The removable build plate makes it easy and quick to change print jobs keeping the machine running. Being able to remove the build plate also makes it easier to remove the print.
The first 8th grader we introduced the machine to had a file downloaded and printing within 30 minutes.

Very pleased with the purchase so far. I was able to print right out of the box with the included models (frog) but also with few models directly from Thingiverse (cookie cutters, windup car...) without any issues.
Dremel DigiLab 3D slicer works best for me, I tried printcloud but the slicer gave me some issues and the results were not great with some bed adhesion problems.
Overall pretty happy with the purchase.
Concerning the EDU package that I bought to go through my 8 years old daughter and 11 years old son, I was a bit disappointed that it did not come with lessons printed in booklets for the price, it is 100% online and you need to print the lessons yourself. Lessons seem to be well done and I am planning to go over a few of them with my kids, I have not done so yet though.

I am a teacher and I bought this two years ago because I was new to 3D printing. Here is why you should avoid this.

The Dremel slicing software is horrible! I tried it on both Mac and PC and it always freezes and makes it impossible to use. The company is also aware of this and yet does nothing about it. You can find many forums about this. I tried to use other slicing software but the dremel doesn’t work appropriately even when using the correct parameters.

The next issue is they made the filament wheel a certain size so you can only use their overpriced filament. The bed size and height are also much smaller than almost all other printers.

I dislike this printer so much and I am so frustrated with the software that two years later I am inspired to write a review so others do not get it.

I own a few 3d printers, some needed assembly and others not. No other printer was up and running as quickly as the Dremel had it on the workbench and heating up in 15 mins, used the supplied USB stick to print a few of the models that were pre-loaded.

I have about 20 prints into the printer now including a 300mm Hulk for my son. Quality is great, software was very easy to use, if you have used Slic3r in the past this will be very easy to pickup and use.

The only tips or tricks I have found so far is to make sure the filament door is secured, always clean your glass plate of the glue residue no matter how little there appears to be on there and remember to actually hit "build" before walking away and not checking on it for 48 hours.

Style: PrinterVerified Purchase
This is the first 3d printer I've owned, so this isn't really a comparative review, but a review of using the product. First off, it's fantastically fun to 3d print things. My kids have been making themselves toys almost non-stop, and when I can occasionally get in some time for myself, I've been printing up little organizational tools, and it is fantastic for both uses. The printed objects generally come out really fantastic, are very precise, and often look quite handsome. Changing filament is intuitive and fast. However, there are some caveats to be aware of:

Caveat #1: The printer comes with really intuitive free software called Dremel DigiLabs 3d Slicer. It is really easy to get started with and takes 3d models that you want to print and converts them into instructions for the printer, including generating "supports" to hold up parts of the 3d model that would otherwise float in space. Unfortunately, the supports that it generates are really a giant pain to work with, are too frequent, too dense, and too difficult to remove. There is other 3D software (you can search for it) that will do a much better job of designing these supports, but the free versions typically don't work with this printer, and the paid ones are quite expensive.

Caveat #2: Using other software would be a whole lot easier if there existed printer drivers, but the only evidence that such a thing might exist seems to several months old support posts indicating that drivers are eventually coming but not available yet. So, I instead of running a cable to print, I'm stuck ferrying a USB drive back and forth. It's not the end of the world, but it's more of a pain than it should be.

Caveat #3: We've had this machine about a week now, and we've already had to clear two jams. When this happens, material simply stops flowing through the printhead, and device just keeps working away printing (somewhat amusingly) into space. Again, not the end of the world, but disappointing nonetheless.

Caveat #4: The "educational software" was not what I expected. It's a very short, very generic course on 3d printing online that seems targeted at teachers who desire to have a certificate that says they know about 3d printing. I was hoping for a lot more detailed instructions on 3d modeling, support structure, relevant software packages and so forth. In its defense, the educational software did turn me onto the entirely independent and remarkably good TinkerCad and Fusion 360 programs

So, two weeks in, this is not a perfect device and not quite what I expected, but it is a load of fun and incredibly useful for little projects and tinkering around the house. Even at this price, I do actually expect it to eventually pay for itself by printing things I would have otherwise picked up at the store, and of course it opens up the potential to create your own projects that are otherwise entirely unattainable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dremel 3D45 printer amazing

After seeing the potential of 3D printing for my home projects, I wanted to have one at home. I spent a large amount of time reading review. I was looking for a 3D printer that was not to loud, that was closed because I didn’t want an air current on the piece that could alternate the printing quality. I also wanted a printer that was reliable, because I didn’t want to do troubleshooting. I also needed a printer that could print nylon for its proprieties. I finally found the Dremel 3D45 that had all I wanted while being very good price for what it is. After receiving it, it worked out of the box, and I’ve printed lots of part since without any print fail. The printing speed isn’t the best, but you get a very good quality print. The heated bed helps a lot. For those who are more advanced in 3D printing, in the Dremel digital lab digital slicer, you can control every parameter that you want. For that you have to edit the advanced menu first to get all those options. To conclude, I’m very impressed by the Dremel 3D45 printer. I had high expectations, and their all meted with this printer. I would recommend this printer for anyone who wants a 3D printer at home. Knowing people who bought lower cost printer, it is worth spending a little extras buck for this one. For what it can do I find it a very good price.
