We still play with both hands face up, which is fine. I play him at about 70% effort so he wins about 80% of the time. It's allowed me to text him to neither "bemoan his defeat nor crow his victory".
It takes us about 45-60 minutes per game because he has to have us both act out each attack. I love it. Lifetime memories in the making!
As other reviewers have noted, you won't have to worry about certain elements of the game in this introductory set; weakness/resistance don't come into play, and there are no status effects, stadium cards, GX/EX Pokemon, etc. Veterans of the TCG won't get much mileage out of this set, but my eight- and six-year-old love it!
Both Pretty Balanced: We've played then a bunch pure and played them a bunch switching some of the cards out for cooler ones and both are pretty balanced. They both provide a good foundation for Electric and Fire decks.
I noticed that someone else wrote the basic rules only (no status conditions for either deck) and I think that's a fair point. I don't think that's a problem though. In fact I think it makes it even easier for newbies.
My son (6) really likes some of the cards. I think they did a good job picking out some really neat cards and holos. I mainly got this because he wanted a Charizard deck and this was the best and cheapest option out there.

The decks are pretty basic in terms of abilities when compared to other decks in the Pokémon TCG but for beginners, this is perfect. The rules are well set out and easy to follow, plus you get the codes to redeem the decks in the online version too should you want to.
Some reviews have said that the decks are uneven and one is easy better than the other but so far in c. 50 games with it, the winning percentage for each deck is roughly 50/50. Being a TCG, the hand you have is quite key to whether you can win or you'll struggle but there are no glaring cards that make one deck immediately stronger than the other.
All in all, this has provided hours of fun and is a great introduction to the TCG for younger players, especially given it has two of the most recognisable Pokémon as the deck characters.
